Langan Legacy Donald J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship

The Langan Legacy Donald J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship provides awards to NYU Tandon School of Engineering students in good standing and enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate program with focus on environmental engineering.
The scholarship honors the late Donald J. Murphy, a distinguished former member of Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, for his contributions to the deep foundations industry.
Award
One scholarship, in the amount of $6,250 USD will be awarded in 2024. Awards may be used for funding tuition, fees, books, and/or educational living expenses.
The scholarship check, payable to the student, will be sent in January 2025 after proof of enrollment and other required information is received by the DFI Educational Trust.
Eligibility & Requirements
This scholarship is open to NYU Tandon students only. Applications are made directly to the DFI Educational Trust. Please direct all inquiries and questions by email to scholarships@dfi.org.

Eligibility
- Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time (as defined by the school) in a graduate or undergraduate program at NYU Tandon with a focus on environmental engineering.
- The minimum GPA required is 3.0/4.0 (alternatively, a “B” or its equivalent).
- Applicants must demonstrate an interest in environmental engineering
- Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
- Applicants must provide the Trust with all required contact information.
Required Documents
- Personal essay, no more than 500 words, highlighting why the applicant chose to pursue a deep foundations- related career, extra-curricular activities, leadership capabilities, long term plans and goals, and any special financial need.
- One-page resume, including work experience, honors, activities and organizations.
- One official transcript.
- Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be completed by a faculty member at the applicant’s school.
Submission Requirements
- All items on the scholarship application must be completed. Applications missing any of the required items will not be considered.
- The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted no later than October 31, 2024.
- The DFI Educational Trust will notify all applicants of the result of their applications on or about December 15, 2024.
- Applicants, as a condition of submission eligibility, must consent to their resume being posted on DFI’s Member Resources for review by DFI members as potential employers.
- Applicants may be required to participate in a personal telephone interview with a Trust Board member.
- If selected as a recipient, as a condition of funding, applicant agrees to participate in a follow-up career survey that will be sent by the Trust at some point after the applicant’s graduation.
Donald J. Murphy
Donald J. Murphy, P.E., Ph.D., received his BSCE and MSCE from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and his doctorate in civil engineering from Duke University. He also performed special studies in geotechnical engineering at Harvard University.
Murphy served as an adjunct professor of civil engineering, teaching graduate courses on a part-time basis at Columbia University, Rutgers University, Brooklyn Polytechnic and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He was senior vice president, partner and director of International Engineering at Converse, Ward, Davis & Dixon Engineering; and principal-in-charge of Geotechnical Engineering at Dames & Moore Engineering prior to joining LANGAN Engineering and Environmental Services as vice president and partner in June 1985.
Murphy had over 30 years of experience in geotechnical, civil and environmental engineering, and worked on projects throughout the U.S., the Middle East, the Far East, South America and the Caribbean. Murphy’s special areas of interest were geotechnical engineering and the civil and environmental engineering aspects of waste management.
Murphy was born in the East New York section of Brooklyn before settling in Cranford, New Jersey. He had a passion for travel and scuba diving. Murphy passed away on September 10, 1993.
