Langan Legacy George P. Kelley Memorial Scholarship

The Langan Legacy George P. Kelley Memorial Scholarship provides awards to Drexel University students in good standing and enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate civil engineering program.

DFI is an industry association dedicated to the advancement of the design and construction of deep foundations. DFI recognizes that the future of our industry will depend upon our ability to encourage and engage promising young engineers to consider careers in civil engineering.

Award

One scholarship, in the amount of $6,250 USD will be awarded in 2024. Awards may be used for funding tuition, fees, books, and/or educational living expenses.

The scholarship check, payable to the student, will be sent in January 2025 after proof of enrollment and other required information is received by the DFI Educational Trust.

Eligibility & Requirements

This scholarship is open to Drexel University students only. Applications are made directly to the DFI Educational Trust. Please direct all inquiries and questions by email to scholarships@dfi.org.

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time (as defined by the school) in a graduate or undergraduate civil engineering program at Drexel University.
  2. The minimum GPA required is 3.0/4.0 (alternatively, a “B” or its equivalent).
  3. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in environmental engineering
  4. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
  5. Applicants must provide the Trust with all required contact information.

Required Documents

  1. Personal essay, no more than 500 words, highlighting why the applicant chose to pursue a deep foundations- related career, extra-curricular activities, leadership capabilities, long term plans and goals, and any special financial need.
  2. One-page resume, including work experience, honors, activities and organizations.
  3. One official transcript.
  4. Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be completed by a faculty member at the applicant’s school.

Submission Requirements

  1. All items on the scholarship application must be completed. Applications missing any of the required items will not be considered.
  2. The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted no later than October 31, 2024.
  3. The DFI Educational Trust will notify all applicants of the result of their applications on or about December 15, 2024.
  4. Applicants, as a condition of submission eligibility, must consent to their resume being posted on DFI’s Member Resources for review by DFI members as potential employers. 
  5. Applicants may be required to participate in a personal telephone interview with a Trust Board member.
  6. If selected as a recipient, as a condition of funding, applicant agrees to participate in a follow-up career survey that will be sent by the Trust at some point after the applicant’s graduation.

George P. Kelley (1943 - 2018)

George P. Kelley, P.E., was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa., and developed a love for sailing and spending summers in Ocean City, N.J. He attended Duke University and earned a degree in civil engineering in 1965. After two tours in Vietnam in the United States Naval Construction Battalions (“Seabees”) as a Lieutenant from 1965 to 1967, he pursued a master’s in civil engineering from Purdue University and graduated in 1968.

Kelley was a member of the four-person founding team of LANGAN Engineering and Environmental Services in 1970. Over the ensuing 48 years, he was a key person at the firm, who helped grow the company into a large, multinational business with over 1,000 employees. He was a passionate leader within the company, and served as the chairman of the Board of Directors for 10 years. His commitment to LANGAN employees is underscored every year with the “George P. Kelley Empowerment Award,” which is given annually to an employee who demonstrates leadership results through empowerment.

Kelley’s family, friends and coworkers benefited greatly from his upbeat personality, his relentless optimism and his unlimited energy. These qualities inspired all those who knew him. He was a strong believer in hard work and the power of confidence and positive thinking, which was a winning combination in all of his endeavors. Kelley passed away on June 18, 2018.
